Jose Theatre, San Jose, CA

Originally opened in 1904, the Jose Theatre is the oldest theatre in San Jose. Biggs Cardosa was privileged to be a part of this $15 million historic preservation project, providing a complete seismic retrofit and replacement of the entire south wall. The restoration resulted in a showcase theatre that supports contemporary uses while reflecting San Jose’s past. The 450-seat theatre features a partially salvaged pressed-tin ceiling adorned with new gold leaf along the edges. This project received the prestigious Gold Nugget Award in the category of “best rehabilitation of a commercial or special use building” for structures designed within the Western United States and the Pacific Rim.
